Let’s wander and forage through the forest, where knowledge grows at the forest floor.

Into the Forest: A Wild Fungi Experience

April - May

Step into the forest and learn to meet fungi with curiosity, respect, and grounded knowledge.

These intimate, small-group mushroom foraging workshops are designed to gently introduce you to the world of wild fungi by blending practical identification skills, ecological awareness, and the cultural stories that surround these remarkable organisms.

Each workshop is held slowly and intentionally, allowing space for observation, questions, and embodied learning rather than rushed harvesting.

What to Expect

Each workshop runs for 3.5 hours and is held in a small, intimate group, allowing for a relaxed pace and plenty of space for questions, observation, and discussion. We begin with a grounding ceremonial cacao ritual, inviting everyone to slow down, open their senses, and gently arrive in the landscape before we step into the forest to explore the world of wild mushrooms together.

From there, we learn foundational foraging skills — how to move through the landscape with awareness and respect, how to forage ethically and sustainably, and how to read the environment itself. You’ll learn to notice habitat, seasonality, and the relationships fungi form with surrounding plants and ecosystems.

We then turn our attention to mushroom identification. To explore the defining features of three seasonal mushroom species, learning how to observe form, gills or pores, texture, smell, spore prints, and common lookalikes. Rather than relying on apps, the emphasis is on building your own confidence through direct observation and pattern recognition.

Along the way, we may weave in reflections on the human relationship with fungi, including traditional uses, cultural stories, medicinal associations, and their broader ecological significance.

The workshop closes with a shared moment of nourishment and integration. We’ll explore ideas for using your forage and offer inspiration for bringing the forest’s gifts into your daily life. This final space allows the learning to settle and gives time for reflection, connection, and conversation before we part ways. The exact meeting location will be shared closer to the date, and will be held in one of the following areas: Oberon, Hampton, or Jenolan.

Important Notes & Disclaimer

  • This is a nature-based workshop, and fungi are highly dependent on weather and seasonal conditions.

  • While we will always explore habitat and identification skills, there may be few or no mushrooms fruiting on the day, depending on recent rainfall and environmental factors.

  • Learning is not dependent on abundance — observation, identification, practice, and ecological understanding remain the focus.

  • This is an all-weather event. Please dress appropriately for changing conditions.
