N. rustica
A3 Archival Print
Nicotiana rustica, or Mapacho, is a sacred rainforest tobacco native to South America, long revered as the father of all plant spirits. This potent plant has been used medicinally for its antispasmodic, cathartic, emetic, narcotic, and sedative properties, and spiritually as a tool for purification, healing, and communion with the divine. Its smoke carries intention, seals thresholds, and opens portals of insight by connecting the human, natural, and spirit worlds.
The portal border in this work represents the threshold that N. rustica embodies, the meeting point of chemistry and spirit. The plant’s active compounds nicotine, harman, and norharman enhance neurotransmitter activity and stimulate the nervous system while exhibiting neuroprotective and antidepressant properties. Together, these chemicals mirror the plant’s ceremonial role as a bridge that is a doorway for altered states, clarity, and spiritual awakening.
For thousands of years, Mapacho has acted as a conduit between the visible and invisible, guiding communication with nature, spirits, and the self. This drawing celebrates both the scientific and sacred dimensions of this extraordinary plant, inviting the viewer to contemplate the portals it opens within and beyond.
